Plan for growth
Pond or tank capacity, stocking density and filtration must support the koi as it grows. Small volumes change temperature and water quality quickly. Ask the seller about expected growth and whether your long-term setup is suitable.
Treat water, filtration and oxygen as one system
Clear water is not automatically safe. Waste and uneaten food affect water chemistry, while warm conditions can reduce available oxygen. Use appropriate biological and mechanical filtration, aeration and a regular testing and maintenance routine.
- Stable water volume and temperature
- Filtration sized for the fish load
- Aeration and power-failure plan
- Safe drainage and water-change routine
Feed according to temperature and condition
More food does not always mean better growth. Adjust feeding to water temperature, fish activity and filtration capacity. Stop and investigate when appetite or behaviour changes rather than adding more food.
Quarantine new arrivals
Keep new koi separate from an established pond while you observe behaviour and health under suitable conditions. Follow advice from the seller and a qualified aquatic-health professional. Record water readings and symptoms before using treatments.
