Body is the foundation
A striking pattern does not replace sound structure. Start with the head-to-tail line, body volume, tail tube and balanced movement. Then compare skin lustre, colour quality, pattern placement and the characteristics of the variety.
Confirm the current schedule
Entry, judging and public viewing may happen at different times. Search the event name with the current year and use the organiser's latest notice for venue, admission, photography and result timing.

Compare fish in the same class
Looking at several koi of the same variety and size is more educational than looking only at the grand champion. Notice which fish keeps your attention and whether body, skin or pattern is creating that impression.
Use results as a research lead
Awards can introduce you to breeders and keepers, but do not make every koi from that source equal. Follow up by researching the breeder's speciality and asking what fish are currently available.
